Program Officer

The Native American Agriculture Fund (NAAF) is searching for a program officer (PO) to join our organization.

NAAF is the largest U.S. philanthropic organization focused exclusively on the needs of Native American farmers and ranchers. This position requires someone who has a proactive personality and engaging team player style with a passion for and commitment to the mission and core values of NAAF.

The PO position provides dedicated guidance and support directly to the grantees and support staff. The PO reports to the Director of Programs and will work closely with the team to administer grants. Incumbents may also on a regular basis support an office-wide initiative or assist the CEO, finance, communications, and compliance departments with a special project. The PO will often serve as a frequent point of contact for grantees and external stakeholders and will from time to time be asked to give presentations at conferences and meetings.

  • Knowledge of grants management software and information technology skills
  • Ability to communicate technical, budgetary and program details to staff, grantees and applicants
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Ability to design and implement effective workflow processes and procedures
  • Capability to foster an atmosphere which recognizes and respects cultural and individual differences
  • Advanced communication, relationship building, computer, office 365 and project management software skills
  • Sound judgment with regards to grant programming

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Works closely with grantees on program, reporting and system requirements
  • Evaluates and reviews grant applications
  • Works closely with the Program Director during all phases of the grant making process
  • Implements administration tasks associated with grantees
  • Analyzes data and write reports
  • Creates reports driven from grant program data
  • Prepares docket materials for Board and committee meetings
  • Oversees standard terms and conditions for grant award letters, agreements and grant
  • Provides links between program and other staff so that all fund activities are smoothly implemented
  • Trains others on grant procedures and grants management software
  • Drafts and updates grant process document
  • Conducts analyses of grant reports and program trends
  • Implements and maintains grants management software that follows the NAAF work processes while balancing the needs of program and accounting staff and regulatory compliance; assures integrity of data
  • Identifies professional development and training opportunities
  • Undertakes special projects as assigned or initiated

Bachelor’s degree in agriculture with 3-5 years’ work experience in an agricultural field and/or with Native farmers and ranchers, or a master’s degree in agriculture with 1 year work experience in an agricultural field and/or with Native farmers and ranchers preferred.
